Sony is selling its VR patents to Meta

Sony has agreed to transfer 419 VR and XR patents worldwide to Meta, the company behind the Quest headsets: 180 in the US and 239 in other regions, including Japan, China, South Korea and Europe. The deal was signed in December 2025, and 43 US transfers have already been recorded between June and September 2026. They cover head-mounted displays, mixed reality and glasses. PSVR2 came out in February 2023, and Sony released two games of its own for it, Horizon Call of the Mountain and Firewall Ultra. Then came a price cut, a PC adapter, and months of low stock.
